Don’t worry—you’re not imagining things. Augmented Empire first made waves when it launched on Gear VR over seven years ago. Back then, it stood out as a unique cyberpunk RPG, but Coatsink Software knew its potential wasn’t fully realised. Now, thanks to the advancements of the Meta Quest platform, this hidden gem gets a fresh start, completely overhauled for a new audience.
What’s New in the Meta Quest Version?
The revamped Augmented Empire takes full advantage of modern VR capabilities, introducing mixed reality gameplay where scenes unfold right on your table and around your room. Even better, it’s now playable controller-free with intuitive hand tracking, making the experience more immersive than ever.
To understand what it took to bring this fan favorite to life again, we spoke with Jon Davies, Head of Narrative at Coatsink Software, about the challenges and rewards of reimagining the game for today’s VR landscape.
Looking Back: The Gear VR Era vs. Today
Back in 2017, Augmented Empire launched on Gear VR—a time when mobile VR was still in its infancy. So, how does the modern VR landscape compare?
Jon Davies:
“Surprisingly, it’s not just about chip improvements or RAM. The biggest shift is accessibility. High-fidelity mobile VR is now way more affordable, with fewer barriers to entry. No more slotting your phone into a plastic headset or fiddling with limited controls. Now, you just pop on your Meta Quest, move around freely, and interact with the world using your hands.
However, this also means developers have to consider every angle and position the player might take. The trade-off? A more complex development process, but the games are infinitely more fun to play. It’s worth it.”
A Cyberpunk Adventure with Depth
Augmented Empire blends genres like cyberpunk stealth, tactical RPG, and turn-based strategy. So, what inspired such a unique combination?
Jon Davies:
“In 2016, we wanted to branch out from puzzle games and focus on something rich in world-building. Turn-based strategy gave us that cerebral, take-your-time feel, while the cyberpunk setting emerged naturally from the gameplay concept—sitting at a high-tech table projecting an AR city map just screams cyberpunk.
The story’s dystopian Citizen-Grade System took inspiration from real-world headlines. From there, we crafted a city and regime to overthrow, starting with the question, ‘Who would be the LAST person to lead a revolution?’ The characters became the heart of the story, creating the interpersonal dynamics that draw players in.”
Rebuilding the World for Mixed Reality
Revamping Augmented Empire wasn’t just an upgrade—it was a complete overhaul.
Jon Davies:
“The original game used a locked perspective, meaning we didn’t even render the backs of buildings. For the Meta Quest version, we had to model everything in full 360-degree detail. On top of that, we updated every VR mechanic to support hand tracking, touch inputs, and modern gameplay improvements.
Why bring it back now? The technology has finally caught up with the game’s original vision. With mixed reality and freedom of movement, it feels like Augmented Empire has reached its ‘true’ form, delivering on what we imagined all those years ago.”
