Slice, Dice, and Dominate in VR: Clone Drone in the Hyperdome Launches on Meta Quest!
Step into the Hyperdome and grab your sword—it’s time to face off against waves of robotic foes in Clone Drone in the Hyperdome, the latest VR instalment from Doborog Games. In this fully immersive gladiatorial experience, you’ll need precision, strategy, and a touch of humor to survive the deadly Crashloop tournament. But beware—your enemies can slice, dice, and dismember you just as easily as you can take them down.
Building on the legacy of the cult-favorite Clone Drone in the Danger Zone, this VR sequel ups the ante with its physics-driven combat system, engaging story, and customisable gameplay. We spoke with Erik Rydeman, Creative Director and CEO, and Geoffrey Golden, Narrative Lead, to dive deeper into what makes Clone Drone in the Hyperdome a must-play VR game.
What Inspired the Move to VR?
According to Rydeman, the transition to VR felt inevitable after experimenting with the platform:
“I bought a Quest 2 for Christmas in 2021 and was blown away by how mature of a product it was. At that point, it was pretty hard to resist making a quick prototype to see what cutting one of our robots would be like in VR. Sword fighting in VR lit my mind on fire! And here we are, three years later!”
Precision Combat Like Never Before
Clone Drone’s physics-based combat system has always been a standout feature, but bringing it to VR introduced new possibilities—and challenges.
ER:
“The fact that you can freely move your weapon to target any body part works perfectly with the voxel destruction system we built. We spent a lot of time making sure weapon collisions felt realistic, capturing that feeling of locking swords, the push and pull, and looking for an opening. This precision makes every fight intense and rewarding.”
A Story Full of Humor and Heart
The Hyperdome isn’t just about combat—it also offers a richer narrative compared to its predecessor. You play as Blink, a teleporting rookie looprunner forced into the deadly Crashloop tournament. With unique rivalries, evolving character arcs, and the looming threat of the egotistical champion, The Captain, Geoffrey Golden explains how humor balances the tension:
“Most of the humor in our game comes in the loading room, where the looprunners hang out between runs of Crashloop. This allows gameplay tension to build to a fever pitch throughout the tournament, then releases with an absurd scene where robots call each other ‘glitches.’ That said, some of the most intense story moments happen in the loading room—we like to keep players on their toes.”
Weapons, Turbofists, and Martial Arts
The game offers an arsenal of weapons to experiment with, from greatswords to dual-wield options. But the real twist is the Turbofists, powerful upgrades dropped by defeated rivals that add unique abilities like flamethrowers, shuriken launchers, or necromancy.
ER:
“Each turbofist reflects the nature of the looprunner that drops it. For example, if you defeat FLAMEWAR, the punk firestarter, you’ll get a flamethrower on your wrist. Players can also combine turbofists to create new abilities, like Fire Shurikens or Armored Zombies. These options add another strategic layer to combat.”
What’s Next for Clone Drone?
Fans can expect plenty of post-launch content and updates.
ER:
“We’re looking forward to updating the game, adding more content, and addressing things that work less well than we’ve intended. We’ve also got some elite robots who could use even more martial arts knowledge in future updates!”
Tips for New Players
- Rydeman’s Tip: “Learn how to dash! Striking enemies before they close the distance is key to flowing through combat.”
- Golden’s Favorite Weapon: “The shield with a spike—offense and defense all in one!”
