Enhancing Demeo with Mixed Reality

To get insights into Demeo’s latest enhancements, we spoke with Resolution Games Programmers Emil Jones and Fredrik Hanses. They discussed the integration of mixed reality (MR) and hand tracking within the game and shared their vision for the future of the Demeo franchise.

Originally released in 2021, Demeo receives regular updates to enhance the player experience. These updates include standard patches, language localization, and fixes for minor issues like player turns being accidentally skipped. The development team is committed to continuously refreshing Demeo, ensuring it remains engaging and incorporating new features, such as improved randomization of items from chests.

“We’ve focused a lot on Quest 2 and recently released an update that significantly enhances graphics for Quest 3,” says Hanses. “We aim to ensure a unified, immersive experience across platforms, whether you’re colocating during multiplayer sessions or playing cross-platform. With many players on Quest 2, we ensure its continued support while leveraging Quest 3’s power for an enhanced experience.”

Adding Hand Tracking

Demeo’s 1.32 update introduces hand tracking, providing a new way to interact with the game. A dedicated hand tracking tutorial and help page encourage players to try this method instead of traditional Touch controllers. The targeting beam from your avatar’s hands allows you to interact with character models, roll dice, and play cards. However, hand tracking offers a more natural and immersive experience.

With the release of Hand Tracking 2.2, players can now enjoy more responsive interactions. “Hand tracking improved significantly with v56, enhancing dice rolling, character placement, and game board interactions,” Hanses explains. The update allows for precise hand and finger placement, making gameplay more engaging.

Interactive and Immersive Gameplay

In Demeo, each character model has a collider, allowing players to interact with and manipulate figures realistically. The TouchHandGrab component from Meta’s Interaction SDK enables this functionality, enhancing the immersive experience. Hand tracking allows for finer motor control, making actions like dice rolls and card interactions more realistic.

Spatial anchors strengthen multiplayer sessions, enabling players to share the same physical space while interacting with virtual elements. Shared Spatial Anchors ensure that game boards and environments remain consistent across sessions, reducing latency and improving immersion.

Future of the Demeo Franchise

The focus on mixed reality and immersive gameplay will likely influence future expansions and updates for Demeo and the newly released PvP Demeo Battles. This strategy-focused game pits teams against each other in a shrinking arena, adding a new layer of excitement.
