Multiplayer Mayhem Meta Quest with Stabby

Stabby

Today, we’re diving into a game that’s chaotic, silly, and loads of fun on Meta Quest. “Stabby,” developed by Soaring Roc and published by Rogue Games, challenges players to scale buildings and explore cityscapes to track down and eliminate each other (or NPC enemies) by, you guessed it, stabbing!

Stabby a VR game.

We had the chance to chat with RJ White, developer at Soaring Roc Studio, about his inspirations and development journey for “Stabby.”

Elevator Pitch for Stabby

RJ White: “Stabby is all about the visceral gesture of stabbing. This movement is used for interacting with the world, climbing, powerups, and of course, eliminating enemies and friends. Our goal was to make stabbing as satisfying and fun as possible.”

Inspiration Behind Stabby

RW: “Stabby was inspired by games like Mirror’s Edge, where intense and unique movement mechanics can provide as much action as aiming and shooting in typical FPS games. At its core, Stabby is about traversing high points and dropping down onto enemies to execute the perfect stab.”

Offline Training Stages

RW: “Yes, there are currently 5 offline ‘challenge’ levels, each with a 3-star rating system based on completion time. These levels also contain secrets and pieces of information about Stabby’s fictional world.”

Post-Release Content Plans

RW: “We have new content nearly complete, including a larger ‘Forest Temple’ multiplayer map and six new challenge levels featuring this new biome.”

Progression System

RW: “There are no levels or standard progression systems in Stabby. The game is designed for skill improvement and showcasing abilities against other players online while uncovering hidden treasures and easter eggs.”

Character Customisation

RW: “Players can earn cosmetics to customise their avatar, including new daggers, swords, and skins. These are earned in challenge levels and through secret codes. (Hint: A particular prop in the multiplayer map may hold more than meets the eye…)”

Lessons from VR Development

RW: “Stabby is not my first game to feature stabbing. Titles like Sun Shard and Let’s Go Chopping! taught me why and how the gesture of a stab in VR is so satisfying. Key elements include realistic physics interactions and impactful visual and audio effects.”
