In April, Meta announced Meta Horizon OS and opened it up to third-party hardware makers. This significant step aligns with Meta’s vision for a more open computing platform for the metaverse. With the Meta Horizon social layer, the platform emphasizes people and connection, enabling users to hang out, work, and create together in virtual worlds that span mixed reality, mobile, and desktop devices.

Meta has been enhancing the mobile app to allow users to explore worlds directly from their phones, stay updated on the latest MR experiences, and connect with friends on the go. As part of the April announcement, the existing Meta Quest mobile app will be renamed the Meta Horizon mobile app, with the rollout beginning next week.
Rest assured, no features or functionalities will be removed from the current app. Users will still be able to set up and manage their MR headsets and browse the extensive library of over 500 immersive and MR experiences, with thousands more on the way, using the app’s search function and Store.
Additionally, the app has been expanded to facilitate socialising and self-expression both in and out of the headset. A dedicated tab will allow users to easily customise their avatars and express their moods directly from the mobile app. Users can also complete Meta Horizon Worlds quests from the app to unlock exclusive avatar styles, items, and emotes.
The app now enables exploration and joining of new worlds, connecting friends over music, games, and more. Users can seamlessly travel with friends to catch a live standup set, jump into a battle royale, or simply relax together, all from their phones.
Furthermore, a new light mode has been introduced, allowing users to update the look and feel of the Meta Horizon mobile app to match their preferences. Switching between light and dark mode is easily done from the menu.
The Meta Horizon mobile app is being rolled out for iOS and Android. Users may need to update their apps on iOS or Android to see these changes. New users can search the App Store or Google Play for “Meta Horizon” to download the app and get started.
