Project Hail Mary VR finally has a firm date. Maze Theory’s mixed reality experience is called Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars. It launches on 12 November on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, Pico and Android XR. It is a new chapter with Andy Weir’s blessing, not a retread of the book or the film. So here is what we know about the Project Hail Mary Quest release. I will cover the pre-order extras and who it is for.
If you pre-order Project Hail Mary VR on the Meta Store, you can use my promo code VRCGUY. It is my own code, and it is an easy way to support the channel.
What is Project Hail Mary VR?
UploadVR reports that Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars expands the story of Andy Weir’s sci-fi novel and film. You play as Ryland Grace. The ship’s systems are failing. Your job is to diagnose and fix the problems. Rocky, the alien intelligence at the heart of the story, helps you do it.
Polygon describes it as an “untold chapter”. It covers what Grace and Rocky get up to on the long journey back to Eridani. Maze Theory is developing it with Weir. Puppeteer James Ortiz reprises the voice of Rocky.
On paper, then, this is not a shooter. It is a mixed reality problem-solving experience about science, friendship and keeping a spaceship alive.
How Project Hail Mary Quest play is described
I have not played it, so this is from the official trailers and press rather than hands-on time. UploadVR’s earlier gameplay trailer coverage said you bond with Rocky over the experience. You use science and engineering skills to keep the Hail Mary intact and deliver your cargo to Rocky’s home planet.
Polygon adds a practical twist. The mixed reality gameplay turns your physical surroundings into part of the ship. Familiar spaces transform into areas of the Hail Mary. Rocky helps manage inventory, tasks and cargo.
Maze Theory’s own site pitches the same partnership with Rocky when systems fail. Put simply, the fantasy is this. You are Grace. Your living room becomes the ship. Rocky is in your ear while things go wrong.
Pre-order extras
UploadVR says pre-orders are open now. Early adopters get three exclusive digital sculptures featuring Rocky, Grace and the Hail Mary ship. Those can be displayed in mixed reality. VRDB repeats that Limited Edition Gold Xenonite Collection pitch on the store tracking page.
Project Hail Mary Quest price, platforms and date
Here are the facts I could verify:
- Release date: 12 November 2026, per UploadVR and Polygon.
- Platforms: Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S, Pico, and Android XR. VRDB also lists Quest Pro on the Meta Store tracker.
- Price: VRDB tracks a US list of $19.99, with a $17.99 pre-order style sale price when I checked. GBP and EUR were listed at £19.99 and €19.99. Always confirm in the headset before you buy.
- Modes: single player, room-scale. Controllers and hand tracking are both listed on VRDB.
- Comfort: Comfortable. Internet connection not required, per VRDB.
- Age rating: Everyone, with a Comic Mischief descriptor on the tracker.
One wording clash is worth flagging. Press coverage calls this a mixed reality experience. VRDB’s mixed reality flag currently reads “No”. I am going with the developer and press description here. The whole pitch is about your room becoming the ship. Store metadata sometimes lags.
Is Project Hail Mary VR worth a pre-order?
If you loved the book or the film, a short MR chapter with Weir attached is easy to watch closely. Whether it is worth $18–$20 before reviews land is a tougher call. Licensed experiences can be wonderful. They can also feel like a museum piece you finish once.
Quest 3 and Quest 3S owners are the Meta audience here. Colour passthrough matters if your lounge is meant to become a spaceship. Android XR fans may also clock it as another early software beat after glasses hardware news. I wrote about that side of the market in the XREAL AURA glasses post.
Who it suits, and the caveats
It should suit sci-fi fans, Andy Weir readers, and anyone curious about narrative mixed reality on Quest. It will not suit players hunting co-op shooters or sports. For those, start with the current Meta line-up notes in my Meta Quest hub. Game picks like Vector Tango VR sit in a different mood.
Caveats. First, I have not played Project Hail Mary VR, so I cannot rate the puzzles or the Rocky performance. Second, a single-player story experience is usually short. Third, Pico and Android XR versions may differ in passthrough quality from Quest 3. Fourth, pre-order sculptures are a nice hook, but they should not decide the purchase on their own.
For VR cricket players, this is not a sports title. Still, mixed reality comfort and room setup overlap with how we use passthrough at home. If you are weighing controllers versus hands on Meta’s newer hardware, my note on Meta VR Glasses controllers vs hand tracking is related reading.
And if you want more of the unusual Quest releases from this week, AAA games on Meta Quest 3 helps set expectations about what “big” looks like on the store.
Where Project Hail Mary VR sits in the November calendar
12 November is already a busy Quest day. H3VR2 is due the same week. Free-to-play zombie survival Fading Light is also on many calendars. Fabula Rasa has been delayed to early December, so this licensed MR title may get a clearer window than it first looked.
That timing helps Project Hail Mary VR a bit. It is not fighting Payday’s launch day any more. It lands as a quieter narrative beat instead. For players who only buy one or two story experiences a year, that is useful.
I also like that Android XR and Pico are in the same launch window. Cross-ecosystem releases are still rare. If the experience holds up, it becomes an early shared software moment for glasses-style platforms and Quest 3 owners alike.
None of that replaces a cricket session in the nets. But a comfortable, seated-friendly sci-fi puzzle night is a nice change of pace when your shoulders need a rest after batting practice.
