In the Summer of 2025 I decided to try and build my very own VR cricket game. I had a dream of creating something that I could publish on the Meta Horizon Store and say “I made that game”.
The big ambition was to create a VR cricket game that include a dedicated career mode. Starting off as a young village cricketer and working your way through the seasons to become an international cricketer. Through my social media updates, I knew it was something VR cricket players were crying out for.
I released several updates through out late 2025, but then I hit a bump in the road…
There were several things that I was not aware of. I had not done enough research into the task I was trying to take on. Whilst building the my VR Cricket game, it soon became obvious that I was probably setting an unachievable goal for someone with just a few years of coding experience.
Whilst using Unity as the game engine, I was using several assets that I did not realise had to have a licence before publishing on Meta Horizon. This was a bit of a headache but I found alternative solutions. But then came the big headache and something that made me nearly quite the whole project.
Time!! This project was taking up for too much of my time. My full time job was getting busier and busier. My spare time was becoming more limited every week. It got to the stage of realising that I two choices:
- give up completely, admit defeat and post a video about the time constraints that life was putting in the way
- rethink what the game should be. Can I create something quicker but different that I could still happily publish on the Meta Horizon Store.
I am delighted to announce that I have decided to continue the project, but take a bit of a diversion away from the career mode. My VR cricket game is now fully playable. It is possible to play one match in its current form and I hope to have the game finished in the new year.
I’m not going to pretend that my VR Cricket game will be competition for iB Cricket (at the moment nothing comes close), but it will be something fun, fast and something different for VR cricket players to get stuck into.
I will post more about my VR cricket game when I think it is suitable to do so.
