FISHY VR: Is the Free Quest Fishing Hangout Worth Downloading?

FISHY VR is the free multiplayer fishing hangout that has been climbing the Meta Quest charts. Made by ENVER, the studio behind Scary Baboon and MotoX, with advice from Trass Games of Yeeps fame, it puts you on a colourful island of fishercats. You cast a line, sell your catch, unlock odd rods and team up against sea monsters. And yes, it is free to play on Quest.

FISHY itself costs nothing to download. If you buy other VR games on the Meta Horizon Store, you can still use my promo code VRCGUY at checkout to support the channel.

What FISHY VR is

According to the Meta Quest Blog post from ENVER, FISHY is a free-to-play multiplayer adventure packed with rare fish, giant monsters and a whole island of cats. You cast into the water, wait for a bite and reel in whatever turns up. Some catches are ordinary. Others are rare, weird or useful for upgrades.

ENVER’s own launch post says the game went live on Meta Quest on 15 October 2026 after a Closed Beta that averaged 4.7 on the Meta Quest Store. Meta’s blog post about the hangout went up on 22 October. Either way, the game is out now and free. Metaverse Watcher’s week in review later noted that FISHY had cracked the Quest top 10, giving ENVER three top sellers.

The official site at fishyvr.com describes it as a social VR fishing game where you cast out, collect rare fish and catch up with friends. That social angle is the real pitch. Fishing is the hook. The hangout is the point.

How FISHY VR plays

The loop is easy to grasp. Catch fish, sell them for rewards, then spend those rewards on rods, bait, outfits and other gear. Some rods come with special abilities that change how you fish. Free challenges let you work towards top rewards over time, so you are not forced into a paywall just to progress the basics.

Exploration matters too. The island has locations to discover, characters to meet and secrets in caves and along the shore. ENVER says the residents are not keen on heading into the open ocean. That is your cue that bigger things wait under the waves.

Boss fish and co-op

Some of the biggest catches need friends. As you fish, you can find special items that summon powerful bosses, including giant sharks and other monsters. Then you call in your crew and fight them together. It is a simple idea, but it gives the fishing loop a reason to stay social instead of solitary.

Because FISHY VR is massively multiplayer, the island is shared. You can hunt rare fish with others, show off catches, clear challenges or just wander. For players who already enjoy social Quest spaces such as the vibe around Yeeps, that will feel familiar. Trass Games advised on the project, so that link is not an accident.

Is FISHY VR worth downloading?

For a free title, the bar is low and the upside is clear. You get a colourful hangout, a collecting loop and co-op boss fights without paying upfront. That makes it an easy recommend for Quest owners who want something light after a session of sports or cricket.

If you mainly play active sports titles, FISHY will feel slower. Casting and collecting are not the same workout as batting in iB Cricket on Meta Quest 3 or moving around in airsoft-style games. Still, as a free social break, it sits nicely next to the picks in my best Meta Quest games for cricket fans list. Those titles favour reaction and hand-eye skill. FISHY favours hanging out.

For a broader map of active play, the VR sports and fitness hub covers training and movement games. And the Meta Quest hub is the place to start if you are new to the headset.

Price, platforms and what is free

FISHY VR is free to play on Meta Quest through the Meta Horizon Store. ENVER stresses that free challenges let you earn the best gear over time. As with most free-to-play games, expect optional purchases. Check the live store page for what is sold and what is earnable before you spend.

At the time of writing, the public pitch focuses on Quest. Always confirm headset support on the store listing, especially if you still use an older Quest model.

ENVER also says more is planned: new islands, fish, monsters, boats, ocean exploration and legendary rods. So the version you download today is a starting point, not a finished museum piece.

How FISHY VR compares with other free Quest games

Free Quest games come in many shapes. FireZone VR is a free multiplayer combat game with vehicles and larger battles. FISHY is the opposite mood: colourful, social and built around casting a line rather than clearing a map. If your friends want a chill session instead of a firefight, FISHY is the easier sell.

It also sits in a different lane from story horror or counter-service scares. You are not solving occult puzzles here. You are collecting fish and chatting on an island of cats. That is the charm, and also the limit. Do not expect a deep single-player campaign.

Caveats

First, free-to-play often means optional spend. Read the store page so you know what is locked behind purchases. Second, multiplayer hangouts depend on a healthy player base. Charts move. A top-10 moment this week is not a promise for next month. Third, I have not played FISHY myself at the time of writing. The details above come from ENVER, Meta’s blog and secondary coverage.

If you want a paid co-op shooter instead, EXOSHOCK early access is the heavier option this week. FISHY is the free, lighter one.
