The Great Flood VR: Free Quest Strategy from 9 November

The Great Flood VR is a free mixed reality strategy game coming to Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S on 9 November 2026. You command mythical squads on a tabletop battlefield in your own room, in 1v1 duels or 2v2 team fights. I have not played it yet. Here is what the developers and the store pages actually say before launch, and what is still unclear.

The download itself is free, but if you pick up a paid extra for The Great Flood on the Meta Store, or buy another Quest game while you are browsing, you can use my promo code VRCGUY. It is my own code, and it helps keep this site going.

What is The Great Flood VR?

SoulFire Studio and LingVision Games announced the game on 29 October. According to their Games Press release, it is a real-time strategy title inspired by Chinese mythology. You pick a squad of mythical characters and fight other players on a tabletop-style battlefield.

The Meta Horizon Store listing, as recorded by Quest Store DB, puts it in plain terms. You pick a squad, play ranked battles, unlock rewards and upgrade your troops. It also says you can walk around your own space and explore the live battlefield, then place troops where you want them. That is the mixed reality bit, rather than a fully virtual map you only see through a menu.

UploadVR describes it as a fast-paced player-versus-player strategy game for up to four people. You choose from more than fifty units, then pair them with artefacts and defensive structures. The studio also promises themed limited-time events and a seasonal battle pass.

When does The Great Flood come out?

The official date is 9 November 2026. That comes from the developers’ own announcement and matches UploadVR’s November round-up. VR Today Magazine repeated the same date. The Meta Store page I checked still showed the broader window “November 2026”, so the store copy is a little vaguer than the press release.

The game’s official Bluesky account also flagged a launch-day “Play with Devs” session on 9 November, at 10am Pacific time, which is 6pm UK time. That is a developer event, not something I have attended. If you like jumping in with the people who made the game, it is worth checking their Discord on the day.

How The Great Flood battles work

Each squad has ten slots. Two of those are heroes. The other eight hold soldiers and spells. The press release says those can include flying beasts, fast ground attackers and area-of-effect spells that you cast yourself. You can change the line-up between matches, so you are not stuck with one deck all evening.

During a fight, you pick troops from your arm and place them on the tabletop. Units can push toward the other player’s base or help defend your own side. You can also put down defensive towers. The developers say rounds move quickly, and a match can swing in a short space of time.

Modes are straightforward on paper. You can fight 1v1, or team up for 2v2. Bots are available as well, both to fill matches faster and, according to the store text, to give you someone to battle when a person is not around. The store copy also lists ranked play, plus player-versus-environment modes beside the player-versus-player fights. The training area is the obvious home for that, though we will know more once it is live.

So this is not a slow PC strategy game with endless menus. It is closer to a tabletop auto-battler you physically walk around. That is unusual on Quest, where most free multiplayer games are shooters or social hangouts.

Which headsets can play The Great Flood?

Quest Store DB and VRDB both list Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S only. Quest 2 is not on the list. That fits the wider picture, as Meta is winding down new features for older headsets. I covered that in my piece on Quest 2 end of support. If one of your mates is still on a Quest 2, they should not count on joining your 2v2 team.

The listing says you can play sitting or standing, with Touch controllers. It also needs an internet connection, which makes sense for a ranked multiplayer game. The comfort rating is Moderate, and the age rating is Everyone. Languages listed are English and Chinese. There is no PC VR or Steam version in the materials I have seen. For now, this is a Quest 3 and 3S game. If you are still weighing up a headset, my Meta Quest hub gathers the Quest 3 and 3S guides in one place.

One practical question is still open. A tabletop mixed reality game needs some clear space, and probably a table or floor area you can walk around. The store page does not say how big that area should be. If your room is tight, you may want to check that on day one before you invite a friend into a 2v2.

Is The Great Flood VR free?

Yes. The developers say it will be free to download on Meta Quest from 9 November. However, free to install does not mean there is nothing to buy. The Meta Store flags in-game purchases that include random items. In plain English, that is the sort of label you see when a game sells loot boxes or similar surprise rewards.

There will also be a seasonal battle pass with both a free track and a paid track. On top of that, you earn coins in battles and spend them in the shop. Daily login rewards and an XP system sit alongside that. None of the official write-ups I have seen name the price of the paid battle pass, or spell out whether paid items affect power in a match. That is the big thing I would check after launch. A free strategy game can be great fun, or it can nudge you toward paying to keep up.

Before launch, SoulFire Studio also ran a Kickstarter. The campaign page shows it closed on 5 November 2026 after raising HK$81,003 from 16 backers, just over its HK$80,000 goal. The October press release had described that target as 10,000 US dollars. Backers were promised exclusive rewards. A campaign that barely clears its goal with a small group of backers does not tell us how the live game will do. It does show this is a fairly small project, not a huge publisher launch.

Sects, training and extras

Away from the table, the press release lists a few hubs. Barracks is where you upgrade your squad. Training is where you practise tactics and earn rewards while you learn. Then the shop is where you spend the coins you pick up in battle.

Then there are Sects, which are the clan system. You can start your own or join someone else’s. The feature list mentions inviting friends, chatting with members, swapping tactics and cards, and sharing decks. For a competitive game, that kind of group play often matters as much as the matches themselves. It is also how a free game keeps people coming back after the first weekend.

How it compares with other free Quest games

Free games on Quest are a mixed bag. Some are generous, and some are mostly a shop with a game attached. I recently wrote about Shiesty VR, the free crime sandbox, and about Fading Light VR, the free zombie co-op game due on 12 November. The Great Flood is aiming at a different crowd. It is a strategy game first, not a shooter or an open world.

That could work in its favour. There are not that many mixed reality strategy games on Quest, so it is not fighting the same fight as yet another free horde shooter. On the other hand, player-versus-player games live or die on matchmaking. If the queues are empty after launch week, the ranked ladder will feel quiet very quickly. Being free helps with that, because your mates do not have to spend money just to try a match.

It also lands in a busy few days. H3VR2 arrives on 12 November, and I have already looked at H3VR2 on Quest 3. Fading Light lands the same day. If you only have a short window in the headset each evening, you may want to pick one free multiplayer game and give it a proper go, rather than sampling three and sticking with none.

What to check on launch day

There are four things I would look at once it goes live. First, how the random-item purchases and the paid battle pass work in practice, and whether they affect who wins a match. Second, how long you wait for a 1v1 or 2v2 at UK times. Third, how much room you actually need to walk around the table without knocking something over. Fourth, whether sitting play feels usable, or whether you really need to stand and move.

I will keep an eye on those points after 9 November. Until then, this is a preview based on official announcements and store listings, not a review of the finished game.
