Dark Trip VR Leaves Early Access: Is This Halloween Horror Worth It on Quest?

Just in time for Halloween, Dark Trip VR has left Early Access on Meta Quest and launched on Steam. The psychedelic horror escape room from Bulgarian studio iWorlds went live on 29 October during Valve’s Steam Scream V festival. If you like puzzles more than jump-scare shooters, this is the one to look at this weekend.

If you pick it up on the Meta Horizon Store, you can use my promo code VRCGUY at checkout. It supports the channel, and it works on VR games across the store.

What Dark Trip VR is

Dark Trip puts you in an investigator’s shoes. You are hired to find a missing woman in a small German town. The trail leads into an abandoned laboratory. It is packed with biomechanical machines, occult devices and evidence of experiments that should never have happened. According to the studio’s Games Press release, you explore linked escape rooms, collect clues and deliberately switch between ordinary vision and hallucination to find evidence that sober eyes cannot see.

Creative director Andrey Klenin puts it plainly. Hallucinations are not decoration. They are a gameplay mechanic. You decide when to trust reality and when to break your own perception of it. That is a very different pitch from most VR horror, which leans on jump scares and chase sequences.

The game draws on Lovecraftian horror, surrealism and occult imagery. iWorlds also describes it as Hellraiser-themed. So expect grotesque machinery and uneasy atmosphere rather than a simple zombie run.

Dark Trip VR platforms, price and timing

Dark Trip has been in Early Access on Meta Quest since February 2025. Then, on 29 October, it finally left that phase as a full Quest release. The same day, it launched on Steam with SteamVR support and flat keyboard-and-mouse controls. Metaverse Watcher listed the Steam launch price at $16.99 on a discount from a regular $19.99, during Steam Scream V (26 October to 2 November). Store prices change, so check before you buy.

So that dual launch is useful. Quest owners get the finished Quest build after nearly 18 months of Early Access updates. PC players can try it on a monitor first, then step into VR if they want. The studio says the Meta Quest version will keep evolving as a native VR horror experience.

You can find the Steam page at store.steampowered.com/app/3492640 and the Quest listing through the Meta Horizon Store. The official site is at iworlds.studio/dark-trip.

How the puzzles work

The loop mixes escape-room puzzles with detective work. You move through rooms, study notes, operate strange devices and piece together what happened in the lab. Some clues only appear after you take the in-game substances that trigger hallucinations. In other words, you are expected to change how you see the world on purpose.

That design will not suit everyone. If you want a clean family-friendly puzzle game, look elsewhere. If you want atmosphere, occult mystery and a story that leans into discomfort, Dark Trip VR sits in a narrower niche than titles like Scary Hot Dogs. Scary Hot Dogs is about serving odd customers at a hot dog stand. Dark Trip is about unraveling a crime by breaking your own senses.

Early Access history

iWorlds has been expanding the Quest build for a long time. The studio says it added rooms, story content, mechanics, localisations and technical fixes over roughly a year and a half. UploadVR has covered that mix of escape-room puzzles and hallucination gameplay in earlier reporting. A closed Steam playtest also ran earlier in 2026.

The Steam page itself was not easy to set up. The Games Press release describes months of review back-and-forth before the Coming Soon listing went live. That does not change how the finished game plays, but it does explain why the Steam launch felt late relative to the Quest Early Access start.

Who Dark Trip VR is for

Dark Trip suits players who:

  • Prefer puzzles and exploration over combat.
  • Like gothic or psychedelic horror rather than jump-scare galleries.
  • Want a Halloween playlist that is more mystery than shooter.
  • Own a Quest headset or a SteamVR setup and fancy a shorter narrative escape room.

It is a weaker fit if you dislike drug-themed content, occult imagery or games that intentionally distort the view. The studio is open about that. Read the store warnings before you buy.

For a wider look at active Quest titles beyond horror, my Meta Quest hub gathers headset guides and game posts in one place. If you are choosing a headset first, the best VR headset for VR cricket guide still points most people at Quest 3 or 3S for standalone play.

How it compares with other Quest horror

Quest already has plenty of horror. Many lean on chase mechanics or counter service, like Scary Hot Dogs. Dark Trip VR instead asks you to think, search and choose when to warp your vision. That puts it closer to a narrative escape room than to a survival shooter such as EXOSHOCK, which is co-op gunplay rather than puzzle horror.

Timing helps too. Because Steam Scream V runs through 2 November, the Steam discount window is short. Quest owners who held off during Early Access now get a 1.0 label and a finished pitch for Halloween weekend.

Caveats before you buy

First, though, this is mature, unsettling content. The plot involves missing people, occult experiments and intentional drug use as a mechanic. Second, Early Access lasted a long time, so some Quest owners may already own it. Check your library before buying again. Third, Steam prices move during festivals. Confirm the live price on the day you purchase.

Finally, I have not downloaded or played Dark Trip myself at the time of writing. The facts above come from the studio announcement, store listings and secondary VR coverage. Treat this as a buyer’s briefing, not a hands-on review.
