Is PS VR2 Discontinued? Sony Pulls It From the US Store, but Not the UK

Is PS VR2 discontinued? Sony hasn’t said so. But it has quietly taken the headset off its own online store in the US and Japan, and stock is drying up at big retailers. So here’s what’s actually happened, what’s still unconfirmed, and what it means if you’re in the UK and weighing up a VR headset this Christmas.

If you’re buying VR games on Meta Quest instead, you can pop in my promo code VRCGUY at checkout on the Meta Horizon Store. It’s an easy way to support the channel.

What happened to PS VR2 this week?

On 3 November, Road to VR reported that Sony no longer sells PS VR2 through its PlayStation web store in the US or Japan. According to its timeline, the removal started around mid-October. Those are Sony’s two biggest markets, so it’s not a small thing.

Road to VR also tracked stock at other retailers. Amazon US availability had been patchy all year and has now “all but flatlined”. At Best Buy and Walmart, the only stock left came from third-party resellers at a big markup. Road to VR quoted $750 at Best Buy, against Sony’s own price of $399.99.

Push Square checked the US PlayStation Direct site itself on the same day. It found a PS VR2 section, but no headset in it. All that was left was the charging station, the PC adapter and a third-party case.

This didn’t come out of nowhere, either. Metaverse Watcher spotted the US product pages returning a 404 error back on 24 October. It said the error was first noticed around 13 October.

So is PS VR2 discontinued or not?

Officially, no. Sony hasn’t made any statement about it. Digital Foundry made the same point: there’s no public announcement that the headset is finished. Until Sony says something, “PS VR2 discontinued” is a reasonable guess rather than a fact.

That said, the signs aren’t great. Here’s what the reports add up to:

  • Sony reportedly paused PS VR2 production in March 2024. Metaverse Watcher points to a Bloomberg report that Sony had built well over 2 million units by then. Nobody has reported that production started again.
  • Sony closed its London Studio in 2024 and cut staff at Firesprite, the studio behind Horizon Call of the Mountain, according to Road to VR.
  • In August 2024, Sony made PS VR2 work with PC VR games through an official adapter. Road to VR called that a “good will sendoff”.
  • Sony has also passed a big batch of XR patents to Meta. Gizmodo, citing ZDNet Korea, says 419 patents are set to move across in total.

Then there’s the timing. As Road to VR points out, we’re only a few weeks from Black Friday. Last year Sony knocked $100 off for Black Friday, according to Push Square. Pulling the headset from your own store just before the biggest sales weekend of the year isn’t what you’d do with a product you’re backing.

To be fair, there could be other reasons. One Push Square reader suggested an upcoming EU rule on replaceable batteries might be a factor. That’s only speculation from a comment, though, so I wouldn’t read too much into it.

Can you still buy PS VR2 in the UK?

For now, it looks like yes. Road to VR says the UK and EU stores still show the headset in stock. Push Square also confirmed that it was still for sale on the UK PlayStation Direct site on 3 November. When Metaverse Watcher checked on 24 October, the UK store listed it at £399.99 with a working Add to Cart button.

I haven’t been able to check the UK store myself this morning, so do have a look before you make any plans. In Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Sony’s store now just points you to other retailers.

If you’ve been thinking about one, that’s the honest situation. You can still get it new in the UK at the moment. However, there’s no guarantee that’ll last, and nobody knows what support will look like in a few years.

What it means if you already own PS VR2

Your headset doesn’t stop working because a store page has gone. Digital Foundry is clear that the hardware will keep working. New games are still coming too. Forefront and Zero Caliber 2 both launch on PS VR2 on 5 November. I covered the Forefront side of that in my post on Forefront crossplay with PS VR2, Quest and PC VR.

The bigger worry is long term. Digital Foundry suggests repairs and replacements may get harder as supplies run down. And if fewer people buy the headset, fewer studios will bother porting games to it.

The PC adapter is the silver lining here. Because PS VR2 works with PC VR, owners with a decent gaming PC can still use it for SteamVR games. That gives it a life beyond the PS5.

[AUTHOR’S TAKE: add a sentence or two of your own here, e.g. whether you or any of your followers ever used a PS VR2, or what you’d tell someone choosing between PS VR2 and a Quest, or delete this paragraph before publishing]

What about VR cricket players?

This is the bit most of you will care about. The VR cricket games I play and write about, like iB Cricket and RealBat Cricket VR, are Meta Quest games. So none of this news changes anything for your nets sessions.

If you’re choosing a headset mainly for cricket, I’ve already done a full guide to the best VR headset for VR cricket. The short version is that a standalone Quest makes life simple. There’s no console, no PC and no cable to trip over mid-swing.

It’s also worth knowing where Meta stands. Meta has said it won’t release new VR headsets without “major breakthroughs”, which I wrote about in Meta’s no new Quest headset post. Meanwhile, if you’re still on an older headset, my post on Quest 2 end of support explains the key dates. So the Quest 3 and 3S look like the main Quest headsets for a while yet.

Quick FAQ

Has Sony confirmed PS VR2 is discontinued?

No. As of 4 November, Sony hasn’t made any public statement. The headset is gone from Sony’s US and Japanese web stores, but that isn’t the same as an official announcement.

Will my PS VR2 games stop working?

There’s no sign of that. Removing the headset from a store doesn’t affect games you already own, and new PS VR2 games are still launching this month.

Is PS VR2 still £399.99 in the UK?

That was the UK PlayStation Direct price when Metaverse Watcher checked on 24 October. Check the store yourself, as stock and prices can change quickly.

What to watch next

The next few weeks should tell us a lot. If Sony runs a Black Friday deal on PS VR2 in the UK, that would suggest there’s still stock to shift. If the UK listing vanishes as well, “PS VR2 discontinued” stops being a guess. I’ll keep an eye on it.
